This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 Cleo steps in and agrees to marry Rafe two days before the wedding in which her sister was supposed to marry him。 Cleo acknowledges that her sister has been the punching bag from her awful father， and when her sister turns up pregnant right before the wedding， she offers to take her place so no one dies。 We learn early on that Rafe has been attracted to Cleo for a while， but he is excited to finally have her as his wife。 Cleo‘s father， a don in the New York mafia， is looking to have someone take Cleo steps in and agrees to marry Rafe two days before the wedding in which her sister was supposed to marry him。 Cleo acknowledges that her sister has been the punching bag from her awful father， and when her sister turns up pregnant right before the wedding， she offers to take her place so no one dies。 We learn early on that Rafe has been attracted to Cleo for a while， but he is excited to finally have her as his wife。 Cleo‘s father， a don in the New York mafia， is looking to have someone take his place in a few years。 He feels obligated to have it go to someone in the family， thus the wedding since he has no sons。 The marriage will unite Cleo’s family with Rafe’s family， who is already a don of his own family。 This is where the story really took a turn and made me realize it was different than the usual mafia romance。 In many mafia romances， the wedding night is often depicted as this obligatory consummation event。 Authors tend to leave this gray or sometimes describe it in a way that can only be called rape。 One of the things that appeals to me about the mafia romance trope is the idea of a strong FMC who helps a stubborn， unbending， cold MMC “soften” a bit and learn to love。 I know a lot of people like the dark， morally gray （or completely lacking morals） characters and situations。 That is not my cup of tea， though， and it usually turns me off and leaves me not finishing a book。 However， Sands gets this mafia trope right imho。 Cleo calls out Rafe on their wedding night for what he thinks is rightly his to take。 I really love that the author has Rafe decide not to force himself on her and wait until she comes to him。 I love that Cleo stays true to her stubborn， determined， and strong character。 Too many of these stories have the FMC go from being described as these strong， independent women who suddenly turn to sappy messes who have no self-restraint simply because a good looking man tells them they’re pretty and their bodies are gorgeous。 I liked this story a lot， minus the zip ties scene， and I give it a strong four stars。 If you only like the really dark stuff， this probably isn’t for you。 If however， you like a good storyline and strong characters in the mafia romance trope， I highly recommend this one for you。 。。。more

I loved that the author didn’t fall into the romance trap of a perfect ending for every side character。 Unfortunately， a romance cannot be carried by its side characters and the fact of the matter is that the main characters were awfully bland individually （especially the FMC） and entirely uninteresting as a couple。
